When the service eventually drew to a close, Charlie grabbed Violet’s hand, tugging her outside ahead of the crowd. Seeing the Circus Ball guests together again had helped Charlie to organise her thoughts.

‘Lady Ashworth is at the crux of all this,’ she told Violet as they walked out the old oak door. ‘She knows all the main suspects, she knew the victim, and the murder was at her party. I can use my feature piece as an excuse to find out what she knows about everyone.’

Violet was slightly out of breath as she followed Charlie down the stairs. ‘You’ve already interviewed her, though. I know that London would love a second part to the piece—before and after coverage of the Circus Ball murder, focusing on the hostess—but do you think she’ll talk to you again?’

‘Well, this is hardly the publicity she covets,’ Charlie laughed. ‘But I hope she’ll play nice for the feature. Lady Ashworth has flirted with the press her whole life, and I’m sure she’ll bet that she can sway this story in her favour somehow.’

Violet nodded. ‘True! And I forgot to mention that despite the loss of her co-host, she is going ahead with the Louvre gala to launch the exhibition. Apparently it will now be held in memory of Marchand.’

‘Thanks, good to know. I can use that as a pretext for the interview.’

Charlie felt that she’d connected with Lady Ashworth, and she was keen to cement their bond. If Lady Ashworth trusted her, she would speak to her instead of the local reporters who were circling. Charlie thought of the ruddy face and patronising voice of the man from Le Monde in the crowd of reporters straining over the cordon ropes, and she knew she couldn’t let him win.

She guided Violet to the roadside, feeling excited and nervous as she thought about where she wanted to go next. ‘We need a taxi, now!’

When the first taxi drove straight past, Violet sighed and stuck out her stockinged right leg—the next taxi braked immediately. As they jumped in, Violet turned to Charlie. ‘Who do we need to see so urgently?’

‘Someone whose usual defences are almost certainly down.’
